Metal ceilings are a fine alterative to smooth or textured drywall, and create a distinctive effect that can fit in very well with both modern and vintage homes. Metal ceilings were first introduced just after the American Civil War and were very popular at the end of the 19th century, so if you are restoring a building from around the later part of the 1900’s through to the mid 20th century this is a good choice which can enhance the final finish of the building.
Metal ceilings are affordable and easy to install, and they can be painted in a number of striking effects, so this is a useful material to work with in home furnishing design.
Buying Materials
There are a number of manufacturers that still produced the materials and accessories you will need for metal ceilings, and there are plenty of patterns and features to choose from (including many classic designs) so you should be able to find something appropriate for the brief set to you by your client. For a very distinctive look there are a number of metal finishes which can look amazing including solid brass, copper and chrome, and also if you are pressed for time you can also buy pre-painted metal ceilings which can be assembled quickly and easily.
Installation
Installing metal ceilings is fairly straightforward, and the patterns are mostly designed so that nails can be driven in at even intervals that will not disrupt the overall design. Metal ceiling panels usually come with full installation instructions, and it is a good idea to prime the reverse side of steel panels with an oil based primer before you install just to ensure against future rust. There are different ways of attaching metal ceilings and manufacturers will advocate different techniques, but for an authentic look you can still get the small cone head nails originally used for installation. Make sure you wear thick leather gloves when installing metal ceiling panels as the edges can be very sharp and can easily cut your hands and arms as you are moving them around and fitting them into place.
Metal ceiling panels are affordable when compared to many other modern decorative ceiling treatments with many standard patterns costing as little as $4 per square foot – although the solid metal copper and brass ceilings can cost over $12 per square foot.
